Krabi First Visit: Ao Nang, Railay, Krabi Town — Where to Stay and When to Go

Updated April 16, 2026 8 min read

Krabi is the part of southern Thailand that overdelivers on first impressions. You fly into a small regional airport, a van takes you forty minutes through palm plantations, and then — suddenly — the limestone karsts appear. Vertical cliffs taller than Bangkok office buildings, shooting straight out of the Andaman Sea. The landscape feels unreasonable. You keep waiting for it to look normal, and it never does.

First-timers almost always make the same early mistakes: booking the wrong base, expecting Krabi Town to be a beach town (it isn’t), or visiting during the wrong week. This guide is the decision framework I wish I’d had before my first trip.

The Three Krabi Bases (Pick One)

Krabi isn’t a single destination — it’s a province with three distinct hubs. Your base choice determines 80% of your experience. Confusing them is the most common Krabi mistake.

Ao Nang — The Default for First-Timers

Ao Nang is the main beach town. It’s the one travel agents mean when they say “Krabi.” A few kilometers of beachfront, dozens of restaurants and tour shops, walkable, and built for tourists. Not in an offensive resort-strip way — more like a larger-than-expected fishing village that grew into a travel hub.

Best for: First visit, 3–5 day trips, travelers who want restaurants and walking-access convenience. Weakness: The beach itself is pleasant but not stunning. The real beaches are boat rides away. Stay here if: You want a balanced Krabi experience with easy access to island tours.

Railay — The Island That’s Actually a Peninsula

Railay is technically connected to the mainland, but dense limestone cliffs block road access, so you can only reach it by longtail boat. That boat-access-only status gives it a more isolated, resort-island feel. Four beaches, no cars, rock climbing central, a few higher-end resorts.

Best for: Honeymooners, climbers, second-visit travelers who want a quieter base. Weakness: Limited dining. Pricier across the board. Harder logistics if you want to move around the province. Stay here if: You’re staying 3+ nights and want the “Thailand paradise” postcard experience.

Krabi Town — Not What You Think

Krabi Town sits about 20 km inland from Ao Nang. It’s the provincial capital, a real working town with markets and government offices, not a beach destination. First-timers sometimes book hotels here thinking they’re in the beach area. They aren’t.

Best for: Budget travelers, one-night stopovers, long-haul layovers to Koh Lanta or Phi Phi. Weakness: No beach. You’ll need a daily taxi or songthaew to reach any beach. Nightlife is minimal. Stay here if: You’re on a tight budget or using Krabi purely as a transit point.

When to Actually Go

Krabi has distinct seasons, and the difference between them is night and day. Don’t book in June and expect the photos you saw on Instagram.

SeasonMonthsExperienceVerdict
High (Peak)Nov–FebDry, cool (26–30°C), calm seasBest weather, highest prices, most crowded
High (Shoulder)Mar–AprDry, hot (30–35°C), calm seasGreat for beaches, intense heat
Low (Monsoon)May–OctRain, rough seas, tours cancel40–50% cheaper, unpredictable

TIP

Sweet spot dates: Mid-November through mid-December, or late January through February. You get dry weather without the extreme December/January crowds and prices.

The monsoon season (May–October) isn’t unusable, but boat tours frequently get canceled when the seas are rough, which is most days in July and August. If you book a Krabi trip in monsoon and the weather turns, you may end up with a beach-adjacent hotel stay without any actual island access. Some travelers love it because prices drop significantly — others feel burned.

How Long to Stay

The biggest regret I hear from first-time visitors: “I only stayed two nights.”

  • 2 nights: Too short. You lose a full day to travel on each end.
  • 3 nights: Minimum viable. One full day for island hopping, one for Railay/Phra Nang.
  • 4–5 nights: The sweet spot. Island hopping, Railay day, one rest day, one Ao Nang/Krabi day.
  • 6+ nights: Only if you’re combining with Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, or a Phuket transfer.

If you have one week in southern Thailand, a split of 3 nights Krabi + 3 nights Phuket gives you two very different experiences without feeling rushed.

Getting to Krabi

Flying: Krabi International Airport (KBV) has direct flights from Bangkok (90 min), Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and seasonal routes from Europe. Bangkok Airways and Thai AirAsia both serve the route. Round-trip from Bangkok typically runs ฿2,500–4,500 depending on how early you book.

From Phuket: A 2-hour van ride via the Sarasin Bridge. Shared vans run ฿300–500 per person, private transfers ฿2,500–3,500. Some travelers take the ferry from Phuket via Phi Phi — longer but scenic.

Airport to Ao Nang: 30–40 minutes by taxi (฿600–800) or shared van (฿200 per person). Your hotel can usually arrange pickup if you ask when booking.

Airport to Railay: No direct option. Get to Ao Nang first, then take the longtail boat from Ao Nang beach to Railay West (฿150, 10 minutes).

What It Actually Costs

Krabi prices sit between Bangkok and Phuket — cheaper than Phuket’s Patong, more expensive than upcountry Thailand. Here’s a realistic daily budget for different travel styles.

StyleDaily BudgetWhat You Get
Backpacker฿1,200–2,000Hostel or guesthouse, street food, one tour
Mid-range฿3,000–5,5003–4 star hotel, mix of street and restaurant food, 1–2 tours
Comfort฿6,000–10,000Beachfront 4-star, restaurant dining, private tours
Luxury฿15,000+Railay/Tubkaak resorts, spa, private longtails, fine dining

Tours are the biggest variable cost. The 4 Island Tour runs ฿800–1,200 on a shared longtail, or ฿1,500–2,500 on a speedboat. A private longtail charter is ฿2,500–4,000 for the boat (split between your group).

The Must-Do Day-by-Day

If you have four days, this is the highest-value sequence:

Day 1 — Arrival & Ao Nang Beach walk, sunset drinks at a beachfront bar, early dinner. Don’t try to squeeze in a tour on arrival day — the transit fatigue is real.

Day 2 — 4 Island Tour Start early (8 AM departure). See our full Krabi island hopping guide for the longtail vs speedboat breakdown. Phra Nang Beach is the highlight of the day — plan to spend your longest stop there.

Day 3 — Railay Day Take the morning longtail from Ao Nang to Railay. Walk the peninsula (Railay East, West, and Phra Nang are all connected by short trails). Swim, watch climbers, eat lunch at a beachfront spot. Return by late afternoon longtail.

Day 4 — Choose Your Adventure Options: Hong Islands tour (quieter alternative to the 4 Island route), Tiger Cave Temple hike (1,237 steps to a panoramic summit), Emerald Pool & Hot Springs day trip, or a proper rest day with a hotel pool and a Thai massage.

What to Skip

Tiger Cave Temple summit hike in midday. The 1,237 steps are brutal in afternoon heat. Go at 6 AM or skip it entirely.

Phi Phi day trips from Krabi. Phi Phi deserves at least an overnight stay. The day-trip version is 2.5 hours of boat transit for 3 hours of crowded beach time.

Budget tour operators on Ao Nang beachfront. The ฿400 “super deal” tours are almost always oversubscribed speedboats that rush through stops. Pay the mid-range price for a more civilized experience.

Elephant riding camps. The ethical ones don’t let tourists ride. If a camp offers rides, skip it. The sanctuaries (bathing and feeding only) are better — Krabi Elephant Sanctuary is a reputable option.

Safety & Practical Notes

WARNING

Monsoon season boat safety: Some operators run tours even when conditions are marginal. If the weather looks bad and a tour is still operating, ask yourself whether the operator is cutting corners on safety. A canceled tour and a refund is always better than a dangerous day at sea.

Jellyfish: Box jellyfish stings are rare but serious. Beach signage flags active seasons. If signs are posted, don’t swim.

Longtail boat noise: Longtails are loud. If you’re staying beachfront in Ao Nang or Railay, you’ll hear them starting at 7 AM. Light sleepers should request rooms facing inland.

ATMs & cash: Ao Nang has ATMs at every corner. Railay has two on the whole peninsula and they sometimes run out of cash on weekends. Bring enough for 2–3 days if you’re Railay-based.

Tipping: See our Thailand tipping guide. For boat crew, ฿50–100 per person at the end of a tour is standard if service was good.

Combining Krabi With Other Destinations

Krabi pairs well with these nearby destinations for a 7–10 day southern Thailand trip:

  • Krabi + Phuket: Classic combo. 3+3 nights, 2 hours van between them.
  • Krabi + Koh Lanta: Quieter, slower-paced. Ferry from Krabi, 90 minutes.
  • Krabi + Koh Phi Phi: Party + paradise. Overnight on Phi Phi, back to Krabi for calmer nights.
  • Krabi + Bangkok: Classic Thailand split. Fly into Bangkok, 3 days there, fly down to Krabi for 4 days.

Final Thoughts

Krabi rewards travelers who plan two things well: their base (Ao Nang for most first-timers), and their timing (November to February if you can swing it). Everything else — tours, restaurants, day trips — is forgiving. The landscape does the heavy lifting.

The mistake first-timers make isn’t any specific bad decision. It’s trying to do too much in too little time. Three days is barely enough. Five days is where Krabi starts to feel like a proper trip. And once you see Phra Nang Beach at low tide with the sandbar connecting to the next island, you’ll understand why people keep coming back.
