Bangkok Airport Guide: Suvarnabhumi vs Don Mueang, and How to Not Waste Your First Hour

6 min read

Bangkok has two international airports and they serve different purposes. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) handles most international flights and all full-service carriers. Don Mueang (DMK) handles AirAsia, Nok Air, and most domestic budget carriers, plus some international budget flights. Knowing which one you’re flying into, and what to do when you land, saves you the confused first hour that most visitors lose to bad taxis, wrong currency exchange, and missed trains.

Arriving

Immigration: Lines can be brutal — 30 to 90 minutes depending on time and season. The automated passport gates (for eligible passports) are faster but not always open. Peak arrival times: 5:00–8:00 AM (red-eye arrivals from Europe/Middle East) and 1:00–4:00 PM (East Asian flights). Arriving at 10:00 AM or after 8:00 PM means shorter queues.

Baggage claim: Standard. Carts are free. Toilets on this level are decent.

SIM card: Get one before leaving the arrivals hall. AIS, TrueMove, and DTAC booths are on the arrivals level (Level 2), right after you exit customs. Tourist SIM with unlimited data for 7–15 days costs ฿299–599. This is cheaper and faster than buying in the city. For detailed SIM comparisons, see our money and SIM card guide.

Currency exchange: The arrivals hall rates are bad: 3–5% worse than city rates. Exchange just enough for a taxi or train (฿500–1,000). Do the bulk exchange at SuperRich or in the city. See our currency exchange guide.

Getting to Bangkok

Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link train station entrance on basement level B1

Airport Rail Link (ARL) — Recommended

The train from Suvarnabhumi to central Bangkok. Station is on Basement Level (B1). Follow signs from arrivals.

  • Route: Suvarnabhumi → Phaya Thai (BTS interchange). 8 stations, 30 minutes.
  • Cost: ฿15–45 depending on station. Phaya Thai (end of line) is ฿45.
  • Hours: 5:30 AM – midnight. Trains every 10–15 minutes.
  • At Phaya Thai: Transfer to BTS Sukhumvit Line. This gets you to Siam, Asok, Phrom Phong, Thong Lo — all the Sukhumvit hotels.

This is the best option for most travelers. No traffic, fixed cost, air-conditioned.

Taxi

Official taxi queue is on Level 1 (one floor below arrivals). Take the escalator down, follow “Public Taxi” signs. Get a ticket from the machine, wait for your lane number.

  • Cost to Sukhumvit: ฿300–450 (meter + ฿50 airport surcharge + expressway tolls ฿25–75).
  • Cost to Silom/Sathorn: ฿350–500.
  • Cost to Khao San Road: ฿400–550.
  • Time: 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Rush hour (7–9 AM, 5–8 PM) can double the time.

Rules:

  • Always use the meter. If a driver quotes a flat rate, decline and get another taxi. The meter is always cheaper.
  • You pay tolls. The driver will ask “expressway?” — say yes. It costs ฿25–75 extra but saves 20+ minutes.
  • ฿50 airport surcharge is added to the meter fare. This is official, not a scam.
  • Tip: Round up to the nearest ฿20. A ฿367 fare → give ฿400.

Grab (Ride-Hailing)

Works at Suvarnabhumi. Pick-up point is on Level 2 (same as arrivals) or Level 1 (taxi level). Grab shows a fixed price before booking: usually ฿50–150 more than a metered taxi but with no negotiation, no meter anxiety, and GPS navigation.

  • Book through the Grab app (download before arrival). Requires Thai SIM or data.
  • Payment by card or cash.

Private Transfer

Pre-booked through hotels or services like Klook. ฿800–1,500 for a sedan. The driver meets you with a name sign after customs. Zero hassle but 2–3x the taxi price. Worth it if arriving late or with heavy luggage.

Suvarnabhumi Facilities

  • Level 4 (Departures): Check-in, airline lounges, restaurants.
  • Level 3: Restaurants, shops, massage (decent airport Thai massage, 60 min ฿500–800).
  • Level 2 (Arrivals): SIM cards, currency exchange, car rental, taxi/Grab booking.
  • Level 1: Public taxi queue, bus station.
  • Basement (B1): Airport Rail Link station, food court (cheapest airport food at ฿60–100 per dish).
  • 24-hour facilities: 7-Eleven (multiple), charging stations, ATMs.
  • Luggage storage: AIRPORTELs counter, Level 2. ฿100–150/bag/day.
  • Sleep pods: Boxtel (airside, Level 3). ฿600–1,200 for a few hours. Useful for long layovers.

Immigration queue at BKK airport

Don Mueang International Airport (DMK)

When You’ll Use It

You’re at Don Mueang if you’re flying:

  • AirAsia (domestic or international)
  • Nok Air (domestic)
  • Thai Lion Air (domestic + some international)
  • Some Scoot, VietJet, or other budget international flights

Don Mueang is older, simpler, and less polished than Suvarnabhumi. But it’s functional and closer to some parts of Bangkok.

Arriving

Immigration: Generally faster than Suvarnabhumi. Don Mueang handles fewer international flights, so queues are usually 15–30 minutes.

SIM card: Same carriers, same prices as Suvarnabhumi. Get one after customs.

Currency exchange: Same advice. Change minimum at the airport, do the rest in the city.

Getting to Bangkok

No train connection. Don Mueang doesn’t have a rail link (the SRT dark red line is under construction but not operational for airport access as of 2026). You’re taking a bus, taxi, or Grab.

Taxi

Same system as Suvarnabhumi. Queue at the arrivals exit, get a ticket.

  • Cost to Sukhumvit: ฿200–350 (shorter distance, no airport surcharge difference).
  • Time: 30–60 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Meter only. Same rules apply.

Grab

Works well at Don Mueang. Pick-up points are signed. Fixed price shown in app.

Bus A1 → BTS Mo Chit

฿30, runs every 20 minutes, takes about 20 minutes to BTS Mo Chit station. From Mo Chit, take BTS to anywhere on the Sukhumvit or Silom lines. This is the cheapest option and surprisingly efficient.

Bus A2 → BTS Victory Monument

฿30, runs every 30 minutes. Victory Monument has BTS interchange and is a useful central Bangkok transfer point.

Don Mueang Facilities

Less polished than Suvarnabhumi but functional. Terminal 1 (international), Terminal 2 (domestic). Connected by a walkway.

  • Amari Don Mueang Hotel: Connected by a walkway to the terminal. Useful for early morning flights. Rooms ฿1,500–3,000.
  • Food: Magic Food Point (Terminal 2, 4th floor) — coupon-based food court with ฿40–80 dishes. The best airport food deal in Bangkok.
  • Massage: Available on the 3rd floor of both terminals.

Transferring Between Airports

Free airport shuttle bus connecting Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports in Bangkok

If your international flight lands at Suvarnabhumi and your domestic connection departs from Don Mueang (or vice versa), you need to transfer. They are 30 km apart.

Free shuttle bus: Runs between both airports. Departs every 30 minutes, takes 50–80 minutes depending on traffic. Find it at Level 2 of Suvarnabhumi (follow “Airport Shuttle” signs) or the ground level of Don Mueang.

Taxi: ฿300–500, 30–60 minutes.

Allow 3+ hours. Traffic between the airports can be unpredictable. Booking Suvarnabhumi international + Don Mueang domestic on the same day with less than 4 hours between flights is risky.

What to Do With a Long Layover

At Suvarnabhumi:

  • Sleep pods (Boxtel, Miracle Lounge day rooms)
  • Massage on Level 3
  • The B1 food court for cheap Thai food
  • If 6+ hours: take the ARL into the city, explore for a few hours, return

At Don Mueang:

  • Walk to Amari Hotel for a proper restaurant meal
  • Magic Food Point for budget eating
  • If 5+ hours: Bus A1 to Mo Chit, explore Chatuchak Market (if weekend) — see our Chatuchak food guide

Common Mistakes

Bangkok airport AIS and TrueMove SIM card kiosk in arrivals hall for tourist SIM purchase

Exchanging all your money at the airport. Change ฿500–1,000 max. City rates are significantly better.

Taking a taxi without the meter. Airport taxi touts exist. Use the official queue and insist on the meter.

Not getting a SIM card at the airport. City shops are more crowded and often more expensive for tourist SIMs. The airport booths are the best deal.

Booking connecting flights on different airports without checking. Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang are far apart. Check which airport your airline uses before booking connections.

Arriving during immigration peak hours without a plan. If you land 5–7 AM at Suvarnabhumi, the immigration line can exceed an hour. Budget accordingly.
