If you’ve been planning a Bangkok trip, you might have come across the term “joiner fee.” It sounds confusing the first time you hear it, but once you know what it is, it’s pretty straightforward. That said, not knowing about it beforehand can lead to an unexpected hit to your wallet — so it pays to be prepared.

What is a Joiner Fee?
A joiner fee is an extra charge that a hotel imposes when a registered guest brings an unregistered outside visitor back to their room.
In plain English: you checked in solo, you met someone out on the town, and when you bring them back to your hotel room, the front desk says “that’ll be an extra fee for the additional guest.”
The amount varies wildly depending on the hotel:
- Budget hotels: around 500 THB
- Mid-range hotels: 1,000–1,500 THB
- Upscale hotels: 2,000–3,000 THB
Some hotels don’t have this policy at all — those are known as “guest friendly” hotels.
What is a Guest Friendly Hotel?
A guest friendly hotel is one that doesn’t charge extra for outside visitors. Bangkok has quite a few of these, especially in the Sukhumvit area.

On the flip side, luxury hotels and resort-style properties are often not guest friendly. They either prohibit outside visitors entirely or charge steep joiner fees.
The Key Tip: Book for Two Guests
This is the single most important hack.
When booking on Agoda, Booking.com, or any other platform, set the room for “2 Adults” — even if you’re traveling alone.
Why? Room rates are usually the same (or nearly the same) for one person or two. But by booking for two, you have a legitimate reason to say “I already booked for two guests” if questions come up later.
This doesn’t work 100% of the time — policies vary by hotel. But in practice, a lot of travelers successfully avoid joiner fees this way.
About ID Checks
When you bring a guest to a Bangkok hotel, the front desk may ask for their ID. For foreigners, they’ll want a passport or Thai ID card.
This is actually a safety measure — the hotel is keeping a record of visitors. It can feel a bit awkward, but in Bangkok this is standard procedure. Don’t let it throw you off.
By Area
| Area | Guest Friendly? |
|---|---|
| Sukhumvit | Mostly guest friendly |
| Silom | Generally fine |
| Siam / Chao Phraya riverside | Lots of luxury hotels — check first |
| Upscale hotels overall | Often have joiner fees or prohibit outside guests |

Pre-Booking Checklist
- Set the booking to “2 Adults”
- Search hotel reviews for the keyword “guest friendly”
- Focus on hotels near Sukhumvit Soi 11 and Soi 13
- Prepare cash (many hotels don’t take cards for joiner fees)
Knowing this stuff ahead of time makes your Bangkok trip so much smoother. A small piece of information can make a big difference on the ground.
