Bangkok Nightlife 101: Soapy Massage, Nuru, and BJ Bars Explained

Bangkok is a playground with infinite options. However, for first-timers, the variety of “Massage” signs can be confusing. Not all massages are for muscle relief. Here is a breakdown of the three most popular specialized nightlife categories: Soapy Massage (The Fishbowl), Nuru (Gel) Massage, and BJ Bars.

1. Soapy Massage (The “Fishbowl”)

Often referred to locally as “Sideline” or “Mp” (Massage Parlor), this is the most iconic Thai nightlife experience.

  • The System: You enter a large complex with a lobby. Behind a glass wall (the “Fishbowl”), ladies sit with number tags. You choose a partner based on appearance and price tier.
  • The Service: The room is equipped with a large bathtub or jacuzzi. The service typically includes a full-body wash and massage on an air mattress. It is an “all-inclusive” service where everything happens within the 90-minute session.
  • Location: Famous spots are clustered around Ratchada and Phetchaburi roads.

2. Nuru Massage (Japanese Style)

“Nuru” comes from the Japanese word for “slippery.” In Korea, it is often called “Byun-Ma” (Variation Massage).

  • The System: Unlike the large Fishbowl complexes, these are usually smaller, boutique-style shops mostly found in Sukhumvit (Phrom Phong, Thonglor). Selection is often done via iPad or photo albums rather than a glass window.
  • The Service: The highlight is the use of a special slippery gel (Nuru gel). It involves a high level of body-to-body contact massage. It focuses more on intimacy and sensuality compared to the mechanical nature of Soapy Massages.
  • Vibe: More private, cleaner facilities, and often higher pricing than Soapy places.

3. BJ Bars

As the name suggests, these bars specialize in a specific service.

  • The System: They look like regular bars or pubs from the outside. You buy a drink and sit at the bar.
  • The Service: If you agree on a price with a staff member, the service is usually performed in a semi-private area or an upstairs room within the shop. It is quick, direct, and focuses on satisfaction without the “girlfriend experience” or long conversation.
  • Location: Mostly found in specific alleys in Silom (Saladaeng) and parts of Sukhumvit.

Summary

  • Soapy: Easy system, visual selection (Fishbowl), bathtub service.
  • Nuru: Intimate, body-to-body gel massage, better facilities.
  • BJ Bar: Quick, drink-based, specific focus.
